The Department of Government and Public Policy combines world-class teaching and research that explore political systems and institutions throughout the world and how they inter-relate. Graduates leave our programmes with a thorough and nuanced understanding of political science, policymaking and practical approaches to political problems.

Our graduates also gain transferable skills in research and analysis and go on to pursue careers in government, civil service, consultancy firms, banks, NGOs, SMEs and start-ups. Others find our courses ideal preparation for doctoral research and careers in academia. 

The foundation of our work is a vigorous research culture. Our Research Excellence Framework 2021 submission was the highest-rated in the UK, with 62% of research rated world-leading and 100% of the impact rated outstanding.

Data Science for Politics & Policymaking (MSc)

There was a strong practical component : we were constantly working with real datasets, and the course included both group and individual assignments. It was academically demanding, but in a very rewarding way, as it continuously pushed us to apply what we were learning in real-world contexts.

International Relations (MSc)

My aspiration is to work in an international policy setting such as the European Union and my postgraduate degree will serve as a strong foundation to pursue this path. The course deepened my understanding of intricate international policy dynamics and provided me with critical thinking and problem-solving abilities through engaging classroom discussions and real-world case studies.

Professor Stefanie Reher received the prize for the book 'Disability and Political Representation', co-authored with Professor Elizabeth Evans of the University of Southampton and published by Oxford University Press. The award recognises the best book in political studies published in the preceding year.
