Personal statement

I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of 麻豆女优, Glasgow, UK, and a researcher in Material Science and Engineering, Metallurgy. I hold a BSc (Hons) and MSc (Hons) in Materials Science and Engineering, an Executive MBA (with Distinction), and a PhD in Solid State Physics, and I have a translational research experience (i.e., industry-academia). I also have significant international postdoctoral research experience.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council, a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE), and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM). I am the Vice President of the Scottish Association for Metals (SAM).

Teaching

Teaching experience

At the University of 麻豆女优, I am fully committed to high-quality teaching and continuously enhancing the student learning experience. I have extensive experience supervising undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PGT), and PGR (PhD) students, and I deliver several large teaching modules each year. My research-led teaching approach and use of innovative pedagogical methods have contributed to consistently positive student feedback, reflected in NSS results at or above the faculty average.

I have developed teaching materials and created an online CPD course in metrology for distance learners. My academic responsibilities include supervising individual and group projects (including industry-based projects), marking undergraduate and postgraduate assessments, participating in PhD vivas as both examiner and convener, and supporting PGR annual reviews. I actively contribute to departmental teaching strategy and student experience initiatives and organise IMechE engagement activities for first-year students. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). I am also a Postgraduate Teaching Leader.

With a strong background in Materials Science and Engineering, I teach across a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate topics, including Advanced Materials and Production Techniques, Integrating Studies, Machining, Metrology, Physical Metallurgy, Materials Selection, Crystallography and Diffraction, Mechanical Behaviour, Thermodynamics and Phase Transformations, Materials Processing, and Advanced Microstructural Characterisation.

Research Interests

Research experience

I have frequently been presenting my research at national and international conferences, and my research in materials science and metallurgy is well recognised within the global scientific community. I have published numerous peer-reviewed papers and a book, and my international background has enabled me to build strong interdisciplinary collaborations.聽

My PhD research examined grain structure and texture evolution in cryogenically deformed copper, covering key microstructural processes such as deformation-induced boundary formation, primary recrystallisation, and abnormal grain growth. I later expanded this expertise during my research in Japan, where I conducted high-resolution EBSD studies on nanoscale electrodeposited copper interconnects. This work provided new insights into annealing and grain-growth mechanisms and delivered practical industrial benefits, including improved performance and reduced manufacturing costs.

At the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), I contributed to Core, Catapult, and industry-funded programmes, developing microstructural strategies that strengthened the link between fundamental science and industrial application. I led major research projects based on my own proposals and served as Materials Characterisation Theme Leader, also representing the centre on the Cross-Catapult Forum in Additive Manufacturing.

As a Senior Lecturer, I lead a research programme of national and international standing, contribute to teaching and student supervision and assessment, and engage actively in professional and knowledge-exchange activities aligned with the University鈥檚 strategic goals.
